A Stroll Through the Graveyard (Day of the Dead 2014)

03 November 2014

A visit to my favourite local cemetery
(Cimetière des carmes, in Clermont-Ferrand, France)
on The Day of the Dead, 1st November 2014.

Lots of pics, after the cut . . .

Broken . . . empty . . . long forgotten . . .

Little alleyways through the villiage of the dead . . .

The chapel..

An elderly couple visits a family tomb.
On 1st Novemebr, the French come to the graveyard,
to clean and tidy family plots and lay fresh flowers in thier memory.

World War 1 Monument

The Depositoire...
where the bodies are kept before burials and cremations

The city crest of Clermont-Ferrand is displayed on the crown of the Depositoire

An odd (yet beautiful) stainedglass window pane,
jutting out from the side of a small mausouleum...

Neo-classical gothic detailing...

A little sprig of new life, reaching out...

More about these two angel monuments (pictured above and below) here

I'm fond of this little corner...
and the just-setting sun was making the light so sweet...

A tiny little grave, lost amoungst the forest of weeds....
